2 oz good-quality rye or bourbon
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1 maraschino cherry
Half dollar sized orange peal

In old-fashioned glass, combine ingredients. Muddle and stir. Add ice and stir until cold.
